Roundabouts and Right of Way in Rwanda: Rules Explained Simply

Roundabouts (rond-points) confuse many candidates — they combine right-of-way, signaling and positioning in one maneuver. Rwanda’s largest junctions use them daily, and the theory exam tests them heavily. Here is how they work.

The golden rule of roundabouts

Give way to traffic already circulating in the roundabout. Rwanda drives on the right, so vehicles inside the roundabout approach from your left — wait for a safe gap, then enter. If signs at the junction say otherwise (stop or give-way signs), those signs rule.

Signaling: entering and exiting

• Entering: no indicator when going straight; signal right only if taking the first exit (turning right relative to your approach).
• Inside: hold your position and lane.
• Exiting: signal right (outward-facing indicator) before your exit, after passing the exit before yours.

Multi-lane roundabouts

• Choose your lane before entering: right lane for the first exit, left lane for later exits, and follow the lane markings through.
• Never change lane inside the roundabout unless the markings allow and the way is clear.
• Large vehicles need space — never drive alongside a truck inside a roundabout.

Right of way beyond roundabouts

• Stop sign: full stop, then go when clear — regardless of who arrived first.
• Give-way sign / unmarked junction: yield to traffic on the priority road.
• Turning across traffic: oncoming traffic has priority over your turn.
• Pedestrians: they have priority at marked crossings — every time.

How the exam tests this

Mistakes to avoid

• Entering without looking left for circulating traffic.
• Signaling too late (or never) before exiting.
• Changing lanes mid-roundabout.
• Stopping inside the roundabout when your exit is clear — keep moving.
