Rwanda Driving License Renewal and Replacement: Step-by-Step Guide

A Rwandan driving license does not last forever — it must be renewed before it expires, and replaced if lost or damaged. Driving with an expired license is an offense that can cost you a fine on the spot. Here is how both processes work.

Renewing your license before it expires

1. Check your expiry date printed on the license — start the renewal well before it.
2. Apply through official channels — license services are handled via irembo.rw and traffic police offices; confirm the current procedure and fees there.
3. Prepare your documents: current license, national ID, passport photos, and the application form.
4. Collect the new license once processing is complete — keep the receipt until then.

Replacing a lost or damaged license

1. Report the loss to the police and keep the declaration — you will need it for the application.
2. Apply for a replacement through the same official channels (irembo.rw / traffic police).
3. Bring your ID, the police declaration, photos and any remaining license fragments if damaged.

What if your license has already expired?

• Do not drive until it is renewed — roadside checks will catch it and the fine (and risk) is not worth it.
• Renewal of an expired license follows the same process, sometimes with additional requirements — start immediately.
